Turkish and World Economy Between Industrial Revolution and 1950

ECON 432 uses economic analysis as a lens for reading the 20th century, tracing how Turkey's republican economy took shape against the backdrop of the Great Depression, two world wars, Bretton Woods, and the rise and collapse of the Soviet model. You'll work through Boratav, Kepenek, and Pamuk to connect episodes like the 1923 İzmir Congress, the statist industrial plans, the Varlık Vergisi, and the 1946 devaluation to the broader global cycles driving them. It assumes you're comfortable with basic macro and history, and pairs naturally with the post-1980 sequel courses, the goal is less memorizing dates than learning to argue why a policy made sense (or didn't) given the constraints of its moment.
