Roman Art and Archaeology

Roman material culture is treated less as a parade of monuments and more as a political language: how emperors, magistrates, and provincial elites used images, buildings, and urban space to argue for legitimacy from the Etruscan kings down to Constantine. You'll read the standard surveys (Ramage, Tuck) alongside the Blackwell Companions, sit through a midterm and final, write an essay, and give a presentation analyzing a specific work in its archaeological and historical context. It pairs naturally with the Greek art course earlier in the archaeology sequence and gives you the visual-evidence toolkit you'll lean on in later provincial and late-antique electives.
