Ceramics for Field Archaeologists

HART 415 is a one-week intensive introduction to ceramic analysis for field archaeologists. The course will include lecture sessions on the staples of ceramic analysis such as identifying technologies of production, surface treatment, fabric, ware, form and date. These lectures will be coupled with hands-on work on real archaeological assemblages collected through fieldwork, as well as guided use of digital tools for ceramic research and documentation. HART 415 will also provide an introduction to advanced tools and resources for ceramic studies, including principles of archaeometric analyses. Ultimately, the course aims to enable the students to devise research programs for robust ceramic analyses in their future fieldwork.
