The fourth and most demanding stage of the Ancient Greek sequence, where the training wheels come off and you spend the entire semester working line-by-line through Herodotos' Lydian logos in the original Ionic dialect. Class time is essentially a sustained translation workshop: you prepare passages at home, parse the syntax aloud, and defend your rendering, with four homework sets and a light introduction to epigraphy rounding things out. By this point grammar is no longer the goal but the tool, and the real payoff is being able to read a classical historian on his own terms — indispensable groundwork for anyone doing serious philological or archaeological work on the Greek world.
