Ottoman History: 1600-1914

HIST 412 traces the long arc from the post-Karlowitz Ottoman world to the empire's collapse in 1914, treating "decline" less as a verdict than as a historiographical problem to argue with. You'll work through the agrarian crises, the age of ayans, Nizam-ı Cedid, Tanzimat, Hamidian autocracy, and the Ittihat ve Terakki years through quizzes, two essay exams, and sustained engagement with primary and secondary sources. It sits naturally after a classical-era Ottoman survey and feeds into modern Turkish, Balkan, and Middle Eastern history, since the institutions, nationalisms, and reform debates that shape the region today were forged in exactly these three centuries.
