Ottoman Turkish and Paleography II

HIST 402 is the second-semester deepening of Ottoman reading skills, where the focus shifts from decoding the script to actually parsing the Arabic and Persian grammatical machinery that makes Ottoman sentences work — derived triliteral verb forms, prepositions, pronouns, and Persian affixation patterns that show up constantly in real texts. You'll spend most of your time working through printed Ottoman passages and rika samples, with regular homework, quizzes, and two midterms checking that you can recognize these elements on the page rather than just in a paradigm table. It builds directly on HIST 401's script foundation and is essentially the gateway course for anyone planning to do archival or primary-source research in Ottoman history.
