Ottoman Turkish is the language of the empire's archives, chronicles, and literature for roughly six centuries, written in a modified Perso-Arabic script and layered with Arabic and Persian grammar atop a Turkish core, this course gets you reading it. You'll spend the semester learning the alphabet, working through how vowels, suffixes, and izafet constructions behave in each of the three source languages, and gradually moving from isolated words to short printed texts, with progress checked through a quiz, midterm, and reading practice. For any historian planning to work with pre-1928 sources, this is the gateway: HIST 401 builds the script-level literacy that paleography II and serious archival research assume you already have.
