The Renaissance here is treated less as a settled era of "rebirth" and more as a contested historiographical category — you'll spend the semester interrogating how scholars from Burckhardt through Kristeller, Garin, and Baron constructed the period, and what newer Mediterranean and gender-aware frameworks do to that inherited story. Work centers on close reading and discussion in a seminar format, with a take-home midterm and a term paper built around your own research question synthesized from the literature. It sits as an upper-level history elective where the payoff is methodological: you leave with a sharper sense of how grand narratives of modernity get made, defended, and dismantled.
