Latin for Medieval and Early Modern History I

Medieval Latin is the working language of the sources you'll meet if you do serious research in medieval or early modern European history, charters, chronicles, theology, legal documents, and this course is the first half of a two-semester sequence that builds the grammar and vocabulary to start reading them. You'll work through Wheelock systematically (declensions, conjugations, the case system, then into the passive and subjunctive), with Sidwell's medieval reader supplying actual period texts to translate, and assessment is entirely practical: two midterms and a final where you sight-translate and parse. It's pitched at graduate students heading into archival work, so expect a steady weekly grind of paradigms and short translations rather than literary discussion, the payoff comes in HIST 482 and beyond, when you can finally read a source without waiting for someone else's edition.
