Ottoman Social and Economic History II

This is a graduate seminar tracing how the Ottoman classical order came apart between roughly the 17th and 19th centuries — the loosening of the timar-kul system, the rise of provincial ayans, the empire's slow absorption into a Europe-centered world economy, and the reformist response that culminates in the Tanzimat. You'll read the historiographical debates, present on assigned themes, and produce an original research paper grounded in critically appraised secondary literature. It builds directly on the classical-period material in HIST 511 and gives you the analytical vocabulary needed for late-Ottoman, nationalism, and modern Middle East coursework downstream.
