History of Furniture

Furniture history here is treated less as a parade of styles and more as a lens for reading how social, economic, and technological shifts (court patronage, the Industrial Revolution, modernist ideology) materialize in the objects people sit on and store things in. You'll move chronologically from antiquity through the 20th century via lectures, quizzes, and two midterms, then channel that reading into a research presentation and a final project that translates historical knowledge into a contemporary design proposal. As a third-year IAED requirement, it gives the cultural and material literacy that your studio work and later thesis-level projects assume you already have.
