This is your first taste of doing mathematics rather than just learning it: you pick a topic, find an advisor, and spend the semester reading into a corner of math deeply enough to explain it back. The work is largely self-directed reading and proof-chasing, capped by an oral presentation and a written report you typeset yourself in LaTeX. Think of it as a runway for MATH 492 and, for many students, a low-stakes rehearsal for graduate-style independent study, the math matters, but so does learning to organize, write, and defend your own exposition.
