Project in Mathematics

MATH 490 is where you stop consuming mathematics and start producing it: you pick a topic (a modeling problem, a historical deep-dive, a piece of scientific software, or a result from a paper that caught your eye), turn it into a real project, and learn to talk and write about math the way professionals actually do. Expect to draft a proposal, give midterm and final oral presentations, write a short essay, and deliver a full project typeset in AMS-LaTeX, while picking up the practical machinery — citing sources, avoiding plagiarism, navigating MathSciNet and the like — that no regular course teaches. It sits near the end of the math curriculum as a capstone-style bridge: you draw on everything you've taken so far, and the communication skills you build here are exactly what carries you into a thesis, grad school, or any job where you have to explain mathematics to someone else.
