The capstone where you take a focused mathematical topic chosen with a faculty adviser and carry it from independent reading through to a written thesis and oral defense, the point is to show you can learn serious mathematics on your own and communicate it like a working mathematician. Most of the term is solo work with your adviser, punctuated by LaTeX/typesetting sessions and a public presentation near the end, with the final deliverable being a properly typeset written project. It's the bookend to MATH 491, and the skills it forces, reading proofs critically, structuring an argument in writing, defending it out loud, are exactly what you'll lean on in graduate school or any quantitative career afterward.
