Systems Engineering and Product Development

ME 588 walks you through how a real product gets from a vague need to something you can actually manufacture, ship, and support, covering the systems-engineering mindset that ties reliability, maintainability, manufacturability, and cost together instead of treating them as separate design afterthoughts. The work is split between individual assignments and case studies built around famous engineering failures, so you spend as much time dissecting what went wrong on past projects as you do learning the formal stages, TDPs, and configuration management. It's a useful capstone-adjacent elective for senior MEs who've done plenty of component-level design but haven't yet had to think like the person responsible for the whole product lifecycle.
