Ear Training I

Ear training is the half of musicianship that lives between your ears and the page: hearing an interval, triad, or rhythmic figure and being able to name it, sing it, or write it down without an instrument. You'll spend the semester drilling solfege in G, F, and C clefs, taking one- and two-part dictations with mixed rhythms, and learning to recognize triads and seventh chords by ear, with a midterm that splits theory and dictation on paper from solfege done out loud. It's the practical counterpart to written theory courses and the foundation every later harmony, analysis, and performance class quietly assumes you already have.

The students will develop their perceptions of modal and tonal music, acquire competence for musical performance with good intonation, improve their ensemble skills and study the basic rhythms and patterns of irregular time signatures. The repertoire and exercice material include music from Gregorian chant to Late Romanticism.
