Philosophy of Mind

Centered on the mind-body problem, the course works through the major attempts to say what mental states actually are — dualism, behaviorism, identity theory, functionalism — and uses the "mind as computer" question as a thread to pull on issues like consciousness, intentionality, and mental causation. You'll do close readings of canonical texts (Kim plus a course pack), write weekly reports, give an oral presentation, and produce a term essay, so the work is reading-and-arguing rather than memorizing positions. It sits at the intersection of metaphysics and cognitive science, and the analytical habits you build here feed directly into later work in epistemology, language, and AI-adjacent philosophy.
