Classical Thermodynamics

Classical thermodynamics done the Callen way: instead of memorizing engine cycles, you build the whole subject axiomatically from the maximum entropy principle, then derive everything else — equilibrium conditions, free energies, Maxwell relations, phase behavior — as consequences. Expect weekly problem sets where you'll spend a lot of time manipulating partial derivatives, Jacobians, and Legendre transforms, plus two midterms and a final, all essay-style. It's the bridge between the heat-and-work picture from general physics and statistical mechanics later on, and the formal machinery you learn here (potentials, stability, phase rule) is what shows up again in solid state, chemistry, and any serious materials work.
