Statistical Physics

Statistical physics is where you learn that thermodynamics isn't a separate set of laws but an emergent consequence of counting microstates — entropy, temperature, and free energy all fall out of probability distributions over phase space once you accept a single postulate about equal a priori probabilities. You'll spend the term moving between the three ensembles (microcanonical, canonical, grand canonical), computing partition functions for spin systems, Einstein solids, ideal gases, and eventually Fermi and Bose gases, with two midterms, a quiz, and a final built around problem-solving rather than memorization. Coming off PHYS 223 and your math methods courses, this is the bridge to solid state, quantum optics, and any condensed matter or astrophysics elective — essentially every later physics course assumes you can write down a Boltzmann factor without thinking.
