Seminar in Social and Cultural Studies:

A graduate seminar that treats cultural studies from "below" — through the critical philosophy and social theory that actually power its analyses, from Kant and Nietzsche through structuralism, Bourdieu, Adorno, Foucault, and actor-network theory. You read a dense weekly text, write short response papers (ten of them), and build toward a term project plus a final workshop presentation where participants bring in recent work the syllabus didn't cover. It assumes you can already handle theory at a serious level, and it's where political science students learn to do the kind of conceptual analysis that grounds later research on power, discourse, and modernity.

Hafta 1
INTRODUCTION: This course is designed somewhat differently from most cultural studies courses. Focusing more on works in Critical Philosophy and Social Theory, it is more like an “underview” rather than an overview of Cultural Studies. And, seen from below, it would not be an exaggeration to say that what came to be called cultural studies in recent years essentially consists of critical analyses of cultural practices and representations. The ultimate aim of the course, therefore, can be summarized as understanding how these critical analyses are carried out.

Workshop: Presentations by seminar participants. The choice of topics and texts is necessarily limited by time and energy considerations. To alleviate this limitation, in the final part of the course, the participants will have a chance to present and discuss topics that are not covered in the course outline, focusing on works published in the last few years in the field of Cultural Studies.
Hafta 14
Workshop: Presentations by seminar participants.
