ENG 312 treats fiction writing as a craft you build through deliberate practice rather than something you either have or you don't. You'll read short stories as a working writer (noticing how detail, dialogue, and structure actually function), produce your own sketches and a full story draft, then spend the back half of the semester in workshop, giving and receiving honest critique on classmates' drafts and revising your own toward a final story and portfolio. It's the one English requirement where the goal isn't analyzing literature but making it, which matters because the habits of revision and peer feedback transfer to almost any later writing you'll do.
