FA 332 traces how artistic practice and technological change have shaped each other across history, from mythological flight and Renaissance anatomy through photography, kinetic and Op art, to today's interactive and virtual work. The framing is that technology doesn't just give artists new tools; it redefines what counts as art and how it's seen, and the course pushes you to read that relationship critically rather than as a timeline of gadgets. Most of your time goes into a midterm project and an individual final project that synthesizes the semester, supported by weekly discussion and independent reading. It's a useful elective for GRA, COMD, and IAED students who want historical grounding before working with digital, video, or interactive media.
