Contemporary Turkish Art traces how painters, sculptors, and ceramicists in Turkey absorbed, resisted, and reworked Western modernism from the late Ottoman period through today, treating "Turkish modern" not as a delayed echo of Europe but as its own argument shaped by Republican reforms, memory, and feminist critique. You'll work through case studies of specific artists and institutions, give three presentations, write homework responses, do a field study in Ankara, and close with a final essay. It pairs naturally with the broader art-history sequence and gives context for understanding the biennials, galleries, and market debates you'll actually encounter as a working artist or critic in Turkey.
