Essentials of Photography

Photography here is treated as a controlled craft of light: you learn to read a scene in terms of exposure, depth of field, and color temperature, then make deliberate choices with the camera instead of leaving them to automatic modes. The semester runs on hands-on labs and two projects, working with both natural and artificial lighting and ending in the darkroom developing film and paper yourself. As a sophomore-year requirement in Graphic Design, it gives you the visual literacy and image-capture fundamentals that later studio, typography, and visual communication courses assume you already have.
