Open to non-majors, this course treats photography less as gadget training and more as a way of thinking about light, image, and what it means for a picture to point at the world. You'll spend most of your time in the studio and darkroom, shooting with everything from camera obscura setups to large-format view cameras, processing prints by hand, and building toward a term project that ends as an installed, exhibition-ready piece. Readings from Barthes and Cotton sit alongside current debates about AI-generated images, so the technical work is tied to questions about indexicality and authorship that you'll keep meeting in any visual-culture or studio elective later on.

Students must have attended 80% of the classes. In order to qualify for the term project, the student must have submitted two studio anssignments and a field project.
