Where ME 231 stops at simple loadings and linear elasticity, this course pushes you into the full 3D stress and strain tensor and asks what actually makes real parts fail — yielding under combined loads, cracks that grow stably until they don't, and fatigue lives counted in cycles rather than safety factors. You'll spend the semester rotating stress states through Mohr's circle, applying yield and fracture criteria to design problems, running lab tests on actual specimens, and building a project around a chosen failure mode. It's the analytical backbone for later design, machine elements, and any senior elective involving composites, plasticity, or structural integrity, and it's where "strength of materials" stops being a formula sheet and starts being engineering judgment.
