This is where the "mechanics of materials" intuition you built in earlier courses gets rebuilt from the ground up as a proper continuum theory: strain and stress as tensor fields, equilibrium and compatibility as PDEs, and the familiar formulas for torsion, pressure vessels, and beams as boundary value problems in linear elasticity rather than recipes. You'll spend the semester deriving displacement- and stress-based solutions by hand (Airy stress functions, thick-walled cylinders, spinning disks, noncircular torsion), with quizzes and a project pushing you into one advanced topic like contact mechanics or Timoshenko theory. It's the bridge between undergrad strength-of-materials and anything graduate-level in solids, FEM, or fracture, so the payoff is finally understanding *why* the formulas work.
