Score Reading II

Building on the foundations of Score Reading I, this course trains you to read full orchestral and chamber scores at the keyboard in real time, juggling multiple C clefs, transposing instruments, and crossing voices simultaneously. You'll spend most of your time at the piano sight-reading chorales, polyphonic textures, and excerpts from late-Romantic repertoire where three or more transposing parts coexist, plus arranging string ensemble passages for keyboard. The skill matters because conductors, composers, and theorists all need to hear a score internally before a note is played, and this is where that inner ear gets built.

Lecture and Individual Performance Outcome Knowledge: Theoretical knowledge of; - Transposing Instruments. - Utilization of clefs for transposition. - Score sturucture Skills: Students will be able to; - Read and perform on the keyboard fluently notes from a score intended for: - Chorales in 4 staves Soprano G, Alto C, Tenor C, Bass F clefs. - Polyphonic texture 2 staves in 2 different C clefs with part crossings. - 1 transposing instrument using C clefs and 1 non transposing instrument. - Keyboard and 1 transposing solo instrument. - String and wind trios. - Transcribing from ensemble to keyboard - Keyboard arrangement written and performed. - Achieve and develop; - Inner aural reading of group of instruments.
