Composition VI

By this point in the composition sequence, the focus shifts from learning techniques to forging a personal musical language, and the course is built around that search. You'll spend the semester writing for large ensembles, preparing professional-grade scores and parts, and assembling a dossier of at least fifteen minutes of original work that you then defend at a final jury on grounds of form, orchestration, technique, and aesthetic intent. It's the stage where the cumulative training of the earlier Composition courses has to cohere into something recognizably yours, which is why the assessment is essentially one serious project rather than exams.
