MSC 411

Composition VII

MSC 411 is where you write a full orchestral work and own every choice behind it, not just the notes, but why this gesture, this timbre, this form. Most of the semester is studio work: building a sketch dossier, wrestling with sonic space, voice, electronics, and spatial motion, then defending the piece at a final jury where you have to articulate your intellectual approach and technical decisions in real composer's language. It's the capstone of the composition sequence, the point where your individual voice has to actually hold up under scrutiny rather than just be promised.
