Music Composition I

MSC 513 is a one-on-one studio course where you actually write music rather than study how others wrote it — the whole semester is built around developing original works under a faculty composer's direct supervision. You'll bring drafts to weekly individual meetings, refine them through discussion, and deliver a midterm checkpoint plus a finished final project, with serious attention paid to professional-grade notation, idiomatic instrumental writing, and engaging with 20th and 21st century musical languages. The point is less about hitting a syllabus and more about finding your own compositional voice, which is why later composition courses and recital projects build directly on the habits and personal style you start forming here.
