MSC 533 is essentially a one-on-one apprenticeship in composing original concert music, where the focus shifts from learning rules to developing a personal voice grounded in 20th- and 21st-century practice. You work directly with a faculty composer across the semester, producing scored pieces that are critiqued in studio meetings and assessed through two midterm checkpoints and a final portfolio work, with attention paid to instrumentation and publishable-quality notation. It builds on the foundations of Composition I and feeds into the upper-level composition sequence, so the real point is leaving with finished, performable scores that sound like you.
