Synthetic biology treats the cell as something you can engineer: take the molecular parts list that evolution gave us — promoters, transcription factors, RNA elements — and wire them into circuits that do what you want, from toggle switches to repressilators to logic gates. You'll move between Uri Alon's network-motif math (autoregulation, feedback, optimal circuit design) and the bench itself, with three lab modules plus a project where you design, build, and write up a device. Coming in with molecular biology and some quantitative comfort helps; what you build here is the foundation for systems biology, biosensing, and the metabolic-engineering work downstream.
