Synthetic biology treats the cell as something you can engineer: take the molecular parts list that evolution gave us, promoters, transcription factors, RNA elements, and wire them into circuits that do what you want, from toggle switches to repressilators to logic gates. You'll move between Uri Alon's network-motif math (autoregulation, feedback, optimal circuit design) and the bench itself, with three lab modules plus a project where you design, build, and write up a device. Coming in with molecular biology and some quantitative comfort helps; what you build here is the foundation for systems biology, biosensing, and the metabolic-engineering work downstream.
