Fluids behave strangely when you shrink the channel to micrometers — viscosity dominates, diffusion replaces mixing, and surface effects you ignored in undergrad suddenly run the show, which is the regime this graduate course teaches you to reason about quantitatively. You'll work through the relevant dimensionless numbers and transport equations, get hands-on with fabrication and device characterization in lab sessions, and carry a term project through to presentation alongside homework and a written final. The payoff is being able to read and design lab-on-a-chip systems — diagnostics, cell sorters, organ-on-chip platforms — which is where a lot of contemporary biomedical and materials research actually lives.
