State and Power

State and Power is a graduate seminar in critical state theory, asking not what the state *does* but what the state *is* once you stop treating it as a unified thing sitting above society. You'll read Weber, Althusser, Skocpol, Tilly, Mitchell, Foucault, Bourdieu, and Latour in close succession, write a short response paper almost every week, and build toward a proposal and final essay of your own. It assumes you already have the vocabulary of political sociology and want to push past it — the payoff is a sharper toolkit for any later work on governmentality, bureaucracy, or the political economy of capitalism.
