POLS 632 is a doctoral seminar that treats the Turkish right not as a fixed ideology but as a shifting tradition you have to read comparatively, asking how concepts forged in the global study of right-wing politics translate (or fail to translate) onto Ottoman and Turkish ground. The course moves chronologically from late Ottoman origins to the present, then pivots into thematic weeks on community boundaries, anti-communism, memory, development, gender, and right-wing aesthetics. You will read heavily, present regularly, and build toward a publishable research paper grounded in primary material, ranging from party documents and memoirs to films, poetry, and visual art. It assumes you can already do political science at the graduate level and want to write seriously about the right rather than just survey it.
