TEFL 501 is a graduate-level survey of how adults actually come to know a second language, walking through the competing theoretical lenses, generative, functional, usage-based, cognitive-skill, processability, sociocultural, and complexity, that have shaped the field over the last three decades. Each week you read a chapter alongside primary qualitative and quantitative studies, submit a short report, and take turns presenting, with a take-home final pulling the threads together. It's foundational for anyone heading into ELT research or evidence-based classroom practice, since the rest of the TEFL program assumes you can argue about which theory explains a given learner behavior and why.
