This is where inorganic chemistry stops being a periodic-table tour and starts being about how electrons actually behave inside solids and metal complexes — crystal field splittings, term symbols, magnetic moments, and the lattice energetics that decide why a structure exists in the first place. You'll spend the semester working problem sets that lean heavily on group-theory-flavored reasoning: predicting d-orbital splittings for a given geometry, interpreting UV-vis and magnetic susceptibility data, and rationalizing trends across the d-block. It builds directly on CHEM 341 and the bonding ideas from physical chemistry, and it's the foundation you'll need before any serious organometallics, materials, or catalysis work later on.
