CHEM 491 is your first real taste of doing chemistry rather than just learning it: you pick a research problem, get paired with a faculty supervisor, and spend the semester embedded in their group working through it like a junior researcher. The work is self-directed — literature search, formulating the question, hands-on lab or computational work, an interim report, and a first presentation — with the rhythm set by you and your adviser rather than weekly problem sets. It's where the techniques and theory from earlier chemistry courses get stress-tested against an open problem, and it sets up CHEM 492 the following semester, where you finish the project and defend the final report.

Usage of GenAi tools or other LLM tools are allowed in this course. However, students are expected to use such tools as learning boosters rather than copy-paste capabilities. Blunt use of Ai tools in other credit bearing components of the course (reports, presentations, etc.) such as direct copy/paste, no significant contribution by the student to the Ai generated material or use of Ai material without paraphrasing are considered unethical academic conduct and subject to disciplinary penalties.
