Principles of Visual Communication Design

COMD 212 is a studio course about developing your own design voice by appropriating historical and contemporary graphic styles—Saul Bass, Swiss Modernism, Surrealism, De Stijl, Victorian ornament—and re-contextualizing them for new purposes. You'll work through five conceptual projects (horror posters, punk show promo, an adult fairy-tale book, a Netflix title sequence, a French bistro identity), each running through process reviews and group critiques rather than exams. It's where the theory from earlier visual communication courses turns into a real portfolio, and where you start defending your choices to an audience the way you'll have to in upper-level studios and in practice.

Course Introduction >> COMD 212 is a studio-based graphic design course where students explore how graphic styles—both historical and contemporary—can be appropriated and transformed to develop a distinctive design voice. Through studio projects at the intersection of visual design and typography, they translate conceptual ideas into concrete visual outcomes across packaging, poster design, book graphics, logo design, film title sequences, and other print applications. By re-adapting, re-interpreting, and re-contextualizing existing graphic styles, students create conceptual projects that visualize new creative possibilities and contribute to their own personal design approach.
