Mosaic here is treated less as historical restoration and more as a working studio problem: how do you push a tradition built on cut stone and grout into the territory of fired tile, ceramic color, and contemporary surface treatment? You spend the semester on two extended studio projects with rolling critiques, using clay as a canvas to test slab work, glaze behavior, and color as an expressive language rather than decoration. It sits alongside the department's other ceramics and surface-based studios, and the portfolio you build is the real takeaway — evidence that you can think through a material, not just execute a technique.
