Graphic Design VI

The aim of the spring semester is to complete the final project that sums up the students' four years of study. This will begin with a portfolio presentation from all the students. Each student is required to show his/her projects and work completed in the 4 year period. During the presentation and discussion the student will be asked to talk about their idea for the senior project. The duration of the graduation project is one semester. The 14 weeks will be regarded as one big design process. The 14 week time scale will be divided into three sections. The first one will be: defining the problem and research. The second: getting ideas. And the last: creating the final product and presentation. . The students will meet two preliminary juries (6 March and 17 April). The final project will be evaluated by a closed jury system at the exhibition hall.

Stage 1 – Define. Establishing what the problem is. This is the first stage in the design process and in generating a design brief. Secondly, defining the target audience. This stage determines what is necessary for the project to be successful.

Stage 2 – Research. Once the brief has been defined and agreed on, the students should start to search for information that can be fed into the creative process at the idea stage.

Stage 3 – Creating potential solutions. During this ideate stage, the students are asked to draw on the research gathered and the constraints established during the defining stage (stage 1). This information is used to create ideas with which to tackle the design brief.

Stage 4. At this stage, students might also choose to harness one of the multitudes of art and design movements or paradigms. A design brief can be given a modernist, abstract, constructivist interpretation, for example. Presenting ideas. The students' solutions need to be presented in such a way that the audience can appreciate and understand the thought process behind them and the messages they are trying to communicate

Stage5 – Prototype. Resolving solutions. The idea stage generates a variety of potential solutions to the design brief. Prior to selection, it may be necessary to further work up the most promising of these solutions. In such cases a prototype can be created. A prototype gives the students the ability to visualize a design concept.

Stage 6 – Select. Making Choices. The select stage is the point at which one of the proposed design solutions is chosen for development. .

Stage 7 – Implement. Delivering the solution to the design brief. This is the stage when the design job is realized, completed and handed to the audience. Implementation is the end of design process and involves physically putting into effect many of the design decisions previously taken, such as those regarding format, scale, media and use of materials.

April 17th - 2nd Prejury. The student will present the design project in finished or at least advanced form to the jury. The second perjury is supposed to eliminate the projects that do not meet the requirements of the course. In case that on the second prejury the student's project would be evaluated as insufficient and thus graded F, such student is disqualified from the further development of the project, is not allowed to participate in the final jury, and automatically fails the course.
