Illustration I

Illustration I is where you learn to translate ideas, stories, and concepts into images that actually communicate something — it's less about "drawing well" and more about developing a visual vocabulary and a personal voice. You'll work through a sequence of studio projects covering line and value, composition, color, character design, and editorial illustration, moving between traditional media (graphite, ink, watercolor) and digital tools (Photoshop, Procreate, Illustrator), with three graded projects plus ongoing studio work and attendance. As a GRA elective in the upper-year studio track, it builds the foundation for narrative and editorial work later in the program, and the habits you form here — sketchbook discipline, thinking in thumbnails, choosing the right medium for the message — carry into almost every applied design course that follows.

Hafta 1
Course Introduction & Visual Thinking. Overview of course objectives, tools, expectations. Lecture: What is Illustration? (functions, history, contemporary fields). Traditional Tools: Graphite pencils (2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B), Mechanical pencil (0.3 / 0.5mm), Erasers, Sharpener. Black waterproof ink, Watercolors (basic 12-color set, tubes), Water brush or round watercolor brushes (sizes 2, 6, 10), Sketchbook (A4 or A3, 120–160 gsm for dry media), Watercolor paper (200–300 gsm, cold press, if using wet media), Tracing paper (for transferring sketches). Digital Tools: Computer or tablet (laptop + drawing tablet, or iPad with Apple Pencil, or Wacom/XP-Pen), Drawing software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate). Portfolio folder (A3) for finished works.
Hafta 2
Drawing Foundations. Focus: line, mark-making & texture, form, proportion, gesture drawing. Explore expressive line qualities. Techniques: cross-hatching, stippling, continuous line. Lecture: Expressing yourself in Drawing. Assignment: Abstract composition using only line/texture. The perception of beauty and ugliness.
Hafta 3
Value & Light. Focus: Shading, contrast, light sources, atmosphere. Tonal studies. Illustration with dramatic lighting. Shading techniques (graphite, ink wash). Lecture: Theory of imagery. Assignment: Illustration with dramatic lighting.
Hafta 4
Composition & Visual Storytelling. Focus: Composition Principles, rule of thirds, balance, focal point, negative space, storytelling through images. Analyzing classic illustrations. Lecture: The Principle of Design. Assignment: Re-illustrate a short fable in 3 panels.
Hafta 5
Color Theory for Illustration. Focus: Color psychology, palettes, harmony, mood. Lecture: Colour. Assignment: Create an illustration using a limited color palette.
Hafta 6
Medium Exploration I (Traditional). Focus: Experimentation with watercolor, colored pencil, or markers. Assignment: Same subject illustrated in two different traditional mediums.
Hafta 7
Medium Exploration II (Digital). Focus: Basics of digital illustration software (Photoshop, Procreate, Illustrator). Activity: Digital Collage.
Hafta 8
Character Design. Focus: Personality through shapes, silhouettes, expressions, poses. Goal: Learn shape language and how form communicates personality. Lecture: How to have creative ideas. Assignment: Design a unique character with 3 expressions and 3 poses.
Hafta 9
Illustration for Print & Editorial. Focus: Spot illustrations, magazine covers, visual metaphors. Lecture: Visual Metaphor. Assignment: Create an editorial illustration for an article headline.
Hafta 10
Narrative & Sequential Art. Focus: Storyboarding, comics, visual pacing. Assignment: 1–2 page short comic strip or storyboard sequence. Illustrate Your Own Story.
Hafta 11
Developing a Personal Style. Focus: Exploration of influences, experimenting with techniques, building consistency. Lecture: POV. Assignment: Create a set of 3 related illustrations in your emerging style.
Hafta 12
Final Creative Personal Projects. Focus: Planning, sketches, feedback, revisions. Activity: Work on a self-directed final illustration project (editorial piece, book cover, children’s book spread, or personal narrative). Lecture: What is semiotics and why we use them.
Hafta 13
Final Hybrid Illustration Experiment. Combine traditional and digital techniques. Explore mixed media approaches.
Hafta 14
Presentation. Write a short reflective statement (150-200 words) discussing your process, choices, and what you learned. Present your work to the class and participate in critique. Process Work: Sketches, color studies, and drafts (can be presented digitally or in a sketchbook).
