GRA 541 treats images as objects of theory rather than craft, asking how meaning gets built when perception, language, and the viewing subject collide on a page or screen. You'll work seminar-style, presenting and discussing readings across semiotics, psychoanalysis, Gestalt, and postmodern image theory, then producing three assignments plus a project that test those frameworks against real visual material, from pictorial representation to data visualization. The payoff is a vocabulary for arguing about what an image does, which underpins serious design research and graduate-level work in any visual field.
