Cultural Anthropology trains you to see human societies the way ethnographers do, treating culture not as a list of customs but as the lens through which kinship, religion, politics, economy, and identity all become legible. Expect to read ethnographies, work through case studies in class discussion, give presentations, and produce your own small-scale analysis of cultural change in Turkey using interview-based methods. As a Spring requirement in the Archaeology program, it gives you the conceptual vocabulary that later coursework on material culture and heritage will assume you already speak.

80% attendance is required to pass the course, with a maximum of 8 hours of absence. Note that in accordance with standard university practice, any student who misses more than 20% of the scheduled classes without a good reason will automatically receive a FZ (Fail) Grade and be unable to take the final written exam. I encourage you to talk to me beforehand if you believe you have an excuse for missing the classes.
