Production Planning is where you learn to actually run a factory on paper: given uncertain demand and finite machines, how do you decide what to make, how much to stock, and when to schedule each job so the whole system doesn't fall apart. You'll spend the semester building forecasting models, solving deterministic and stochastic inventory problems (EOQ, newsvendor, lot-sizing), formulating aggregate production plans, and working through scheduling algorithms, mostly via homework sets and two midterms out of the Nahmias textbook. It leans on your OR background from IE 202/256 and feeds directly into IE 476 and supply-chain electives, since most real operations work downstream is just these models with messier data.
