LAUD 201 is your entry point into the "Concept" rung of the vertical design studio sequence, where you learn to read a real site—its topography, vegetation, built fabric, and social life—and translate that reading into a coherent open-space design rather than a pretty drawing. Most of your time is spent at the studio desk: a site trip and analysis phase feeds into desk crits, sketch problems, and class juries that culminate in a preliminary and final jury where you defend a proposed scheme. It sets the analytical and representational habits that Context (Year 3) and Form (Year 4) studios assume you already have, which is why the grade rests entirely on studio output instead of exams.
