LAUD 301

Design Studio III: Small Town

Design Studio III is where you stop thinking about single sites and start designing whole places, small towns, waterfronts, or pieces of a larger city, by reading topography, climate, and social fabric together before proposing how the district should evolve. The semester runs as a studio: a site trip and analysis phase feeds into iterative desk crits, a sketch problem, preliminary and midterm juries, and a final jury where you defend a full urban-design proposal. As the middle "Context" tier of the Vertical Studio sequence, it bridges the smaller-scale exercises of second year and the more synthetic fourth-year work, and it's where you learn that good urban form is an argument about the conditions you found on the ground.
