Microbiology

Microbiology here is about treating microbes as living systems you can dissect mechanistically, how a bacterial or viral cell is built, how it grows, regulates itself, exchanges genes, and either partners with or attacks a host. You'll work through Brock chapter by chapter alongside a substantial lab component, two midterms, quizzes, and a case study that pushes you to reason about real infections or biotech applications rather than just memorize taxonomy. Coming after your genetics and biochemistry core, it's the course that turns abstract molecular machinery into organisms you can actually culture, engineer, and trace through disease or the microbiome, groundwork for anything downstream in immunology, infectious disease, or synthetic biology.
