Science and Ethics

MBG 416 sits at the end of the MBG curriculum because it asks the question the rest of the degree quietly assumes away: just because we *can* do something in a lab, should we? You'll work through case-based discussions and write argumentative essays on the hard problems your research toolkit actually creates — informed consent, genetic enhancement, abortion and euthanasia, organ allocation, animal and human experimentation, authorship and data integrity. Assessment is built around two written midterms, quizzes, and a presentation, so coming in with a real opinion you can defend matters more than memorizing definitions. The point isn't to hand you a rulebook but to make sure you graduate knowing how to recognize an ethical question before you've already answered it with a pipette.
